words

denise, with black & sick-green
painted nails, rat's nest siouxsie hair
hefted each of her knit long sleeves
showed me her arms, each
etched with words:

"MAGGOT"
"WHORE"
"TRAMP"
"GROTESQUE"

in block letters, thinking
to scare me away
"i'm ugly, on medication &
i cut myself.
see? doesn't that scare you?"
expecting me to make excuses
as to why i had to leave

i smiled sadly,
not sure how to tell her
i'd share her pain,
if only she'd let me,
having carried the burden
of my own

she drifted away before i might reply,
an ophelia in the weeds

Note: I am taking a short break from posting new material and am tossing out a few older pieces as explained here and here. Thanks for your continuing support.

So sad. Hope she didn’t end like Ophelia. 🙁

I don’t know what happened to her. My friend who was her neighbor didn’t know when I asked. It’s actually pretty amusing that I met her independent of my friend, who said she always imagined me dating her neighbor 😂

One kind of date sort of not really.

Life can be so strange. 😐

She was called Muttley in our town. Similar damage. We ended up good mates

I’ve known a few Muttleys over the years. I tend to get along with them because I don’t judge.

Strange how some connections exist without anything ever being made concrete – like an electrochemical connection. Perhaps it’s meant to be that way?

It was an odd connection, to be sure. I only vaguely recall how we encounter each other; we ran in entirely different circles for both being “goth”. Hers was more suburban, I suspect, living just on the city side of that transition. Mine was deep inner city.
