Episode 5.3 of Vengeance, My Heart (episode link), my serialized Sepulchral-Gothic Western novel, has now gone live at ravensweald.art.

The site is designed with reader-modifiable typographic elements so that you can adjust the experience to suit your needs. Click the sliders to the right of the content to adjust.

Crapbuckets. I’ve added ravensweald.art to my Reader but didn’t get the notification for this one in Jetpack. I’m just afraid I’ll miss one.

Hmm. It showed up in mine (yes, I follow my own blogs to see when they pop up for folks). I suspect you may have missed something in adding the feed (it can be fussy when you don’t click the right things).

I’ll do a better post for “How To Follow a Non-WordPress Site” (from Guardian.com to MyLittleBlog.blog) so people who want to follow can, at least using the devices and programs I am familiar with.

Or I add a button that employs the demoted path to “follow this blog”.

Maybe both. The plugin writing by Claude is pretty impressive, so it might not be too hard to do it, provided WordPress allows you to.

That was just a heads up so you know. I only did it yesterday and maybe it’s not picking it up yet. ravensweald.art is listed in my subscriptions and does connect, so that’s good. Honestly, it’s probably my bad for using Jetpack but it’s just so convenient for keeping tabs on everyone and reading their new posts. Reading the work of others is a main concern of this portion of my writing life and I want to make sure I’m not missing anything I want to see.

The demoted path is no longer a valid path, so no buttons, but I will provide detailed instructions on how to manually add a feed to the various platforms (iOS, Android, desktop web browser) in the next few days. I got a nice little button made, but it fails because that path has been removed. You are essentially required to use Jetpack plugins to make it automatic, and I am trying to avoid the unnecessary entanglements and front-loading.

It’s too bad that they are making reader a walled garden that shuts out the self-hosted sites.

Nothing to be sorry about. There are millions of sites that don’t employ Jetpack. I think it’s an odd decision for them to not make it easy to bring other sites into the fold, but that’s the direction they’ve been heading for the past decade. Monetization at the cost of lesser integration.

I’m subscribed in Reader but it doesn’t give me the option of Jetpack notifications like it does for the others. Le sigh. Stupid WordPress. Any workaround you know of?

Ahh! Are you looking for email notifications? That’s more than just adding to WordPress Reader.

Jenn was looking for those too, so I set something up with a third party service that doesn’t require an account. You tell them the site you want to follow, the type of newsletter frequency and give them an email address.

You can sign up by using the box here: https://ravensweald.art/subscribe/#email

Email subs are an entirely different can of worms. I could do it on-site (instead of Jetpack-powered), but it either costs money, adds unnecessary scripts, or stores your information in my database, which I am avoiding doing for security reasons (to protect your data).

Let me know if/how it works for you (assuming that I understand what your needs are).

                  I think that’ll work!

Please, please let me know if it spams you so I can look into alternatives. It does do a quick redirect for stats (I assume) and optional monetization (should be off) prior to launching the site, but so far seems clean.

Sorry, that wasn’t quite right. ravensweald.art shows in my subscriptions but it only has the same link you put into your reminder on ravensweald, and no notification in jetpack. It’s easy enough to click over, and I’m definitely not trying to be a buzzkill as I do like the layout and look of ravensweald.art a lot. I hope you can use the feedback.

If you can send me a screenshot, I can possibly troubleshoot that when I give instructions if I see what your seeing.

        2. michael raven Avatar

I know you use iOS and those instructions are forthcoming once I pull some screenshots to illustrate what I am doing. The scheme is the same, but the locations move around depending on orientation and platform. Anyway, instructions are here: Subscribe

Instructions for iOS are included now. My thought it that you followed the site and WordPress is pointing to the wrong feed. Pointing directly to the correct feed (https://ravensweald.art/feed) should help.

That said, I have heavily modified the site and Reader might be looking for something that is not there. It wouldn’t surprise me if it went looking for “/post” feeds instead of the established “/feed” or “/rss”. The structure of the site is a page-based structure and there is no content for “posts”.

Or Reader just hates me. It could happen.
