Lowry Hill man shot and killed in dispute over barking dog
Neighbor charged with second-degree murder; residents say dispute over noise had simmered for weeks
By Hazel Peterson, Star Tribune
Kyle Donovan, 55, of Lowry Hill, was fatally shot during an argument between two of his neighbors on Sunday morning.
Witnesses said Donovan stepped between the two men and was urging them to calm down when the gun went off.
According to the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office, Donovan died of a gunshot wound at the scene.
Residents said the argument was a longstanding dispute between Paul Hanson, 35, and Ernie Krauss, 24, both of Lowry Hill, over barking by Krauss’s German shepherd, Whipple.
Erin Pirkle, who lives across the hallway from Hanson, said: “Paul worked overnights as a janitor at the Wyatt building downtown. He always seemed exhausted when we talked but didn’t seem like the kind of guy to kill anyone.”
Sgt. Will Reilly said police arrived within minutes of the gunfire. He added that Krauss was observed attempting CPR on Donovan when officers arrived.
Hanson was arrested at the scene and booked into the Hennepin County jail. The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office charged Hanson Tuesday with second-degree unintentional murder and reckless discharge of a firearm within city limits.
According to police, this was the city’s 59th homicide this year.
Neighbors described Donovan as a well-liked member of the community known for his role as a mediator and for bringing people together. He recently won a fellowship from the Loring Literary Center, allowing him to take a leave from his job as a press operator at a packaging plant in northeast Minneapolis to focus his time on finishing his first novel, “Stone Cold Buddha.” His first book, the self-published “The Head of a Dead Cat: Radical Zen in the Modern Era,” came out in 2017.
In a statement provided to the press, Donovan’s sister, Alice Donovan of River Falls, Wisconsin, asked that memorials be made to either the Loring Literary Center or the Minneapolis Aikido Dojo in his memory.

Man convicted of manslaughter in August shooting death of Kyle Donovan
Sentencing hearing is set for June 3.
By Hazel Peterson, Star Tribune
Paul Hanson, 37, of Minneapolis’s Lowry Hill neighborhood, was acquitted Thursday of second-degree unintentional murder and convicted of second-degree manslaughter by a Hennepin County jury in the August [withheld] death of Kyle Donovan, 55.
Prosecutors had charged Hanson with murder and reckless discharge of a firearm within city limits. Jurors were allowed to consider manslaughter as a lesser charge during deliberations. They also convicted Hanson on the discharge count.
The jury deliberated for one day after a three-day trial before Hennepin County District Judge Raymond O’Neill. Sentencing is scheduled for June 3. Because Hanson has no criminal record, Minnesota sentencing guidelines call for a presumptive sentence of 48 months.
Assistant Hennepin County Attorney Karen Westerman told jurors that Hanson brought a loaded gun to a neighborhood argument and pointed it at Ernie Krauss to intimidate him.
A witness at the scene, Erin Pirkle, testified she saw Hanson aiming at Krauss’s dog and threatening to “shut the damned thing up if Ernie wouldn’t.” She said that it was only after Krauss attempted to shield his dog that Hanson turned the gun on Krauss. She said Donovan stepped between the men moments before the gun went off.
