halcyon days

sunlight shining through old growth woods

those halcyon days
we slipped beneath
wrapped in wave
and calm, in the before of
those days we summered
tangled in locust drone
in high elms lagging
speaking softly in
summer fade with
our ghostselves in haze
waiting for to begin

Carefree days poetically portrayed. 🌄 Gorgeous image!

Welcome! Thank you for the visual of a carefree summer. 🥰 Even better as an older. 😄

Lovely. This really captures that wispy youth feel. So much still unsettled.

Memories of youth always feel unsettled, don’t you think?

      1. Bob Avatar

Yes. And that they change over time. There’s got to be a discrepancy from the telling and what actually happened.

And then you throw a storyteller into the mix and who knows what you’ll get in the end?

Maybe that’s how fables start. A good story retold and retold over time.

You might be on to something there…

    Bittersweet as ever, man.

    Were they really that good?

At the time, it seemed so. shrug

I agree with that. I can vividly remember the back of that pickup truck, and the smell and feel of that summer day, and the radio, playing that new song Sweet Child O’ Mine. If I was there today would it stick in my memory the same way? Is the lesson to be patient and wait for the days that echo that way? We can’t force it. Do they still come once we’re jaded adults? I don’t know. It’s certainly not the same, but I believe in hanging on to those moments and looking for more.

Oh there’s nothing wrong for looking for more. I don’t know that those moments have stopped happening either. I think they are just a different flavor of moment that we can only see in retrospect.

We (humanity) are very shortsighted as a rule.

Perhaps our minds like to skew our memories for self-preservation or just to make us feel better about what we’ve lost?
    Great piece, Michael.

Perhaps. I’m never sure. And some of it is just plain imagination.

Don’t you find sometimes that those around you find it hard to accept that you can write a piece that is purely fiction, especially as so many writers seem to base their work on personal experience?
It’s often said that the best writing is writing from experience. I’m not convinced.

        1. michael raven Avatar

There is always some element of experience I think. But I think that the whole “write what you know” is largely bollocks. I’m afraid I would bore people to tears more than I already do if I were to write largely from that perspective.

          Diaper 12
Well, I have now changed twelve diapers today, which should not surprise me in the least when you consider that twin babes are involved. And yet… I am somewhat amazed that two tiny things such as these are able to produce so much waste in less than 24 hours. Drat. Make that diaper thirteen….”

My god, you’ve got me hooked! This could be an epic 🤣

          2. michael raven Avatar

🤣 Oh my. I’ll toss in an alien that looks like breakfast sausage and a long train ride to nowhere, with a multitude of diaper changes from a myriad of species, ultimately ending up back at home changing diapers on twins with never having any epiphanies or changes in my character — and then we can call it postmodern.

🤣 All of life contained in compressed shit.
            Sounds about right 🤣
