oh, ffs

Apparently, I’m a “commercial site” according to WordPress because I had the audacity to point to a book of poetry that I’ve written. Therefore, to keep Jetpack, I should pay them more than I have ever made on said book during its lifetime each year to keep Jetpack. Or remove the offending link/page. Not doing so will mean losing the functionality of connecting my site to WordPress.com readers.

Which I have. Gods forbid I promote something I authored. They might not get their cut of my meager earnings. And a pound of flesh while their at it.

I hereby certify that I make not one single penny from having this site up and functioning. Choke on that pound of flesh.

    They truly are 🤬🤬🤬

What makes me annoyed is that I run zero ads, give away most of my content, do not directly sell merchandise and have always spent more than I make. Even the tax man recognizes that I lose more than I profit from my arts and carves out an exception in the tax code. This is not a commerce site. But that’s what happens when you let AI make the call.

A book you say? Hmm mhmm. My paws are itching. ‘Twill be in them in two days if on Amazon.
Can you make an author’s page instead of linking it, but just writing in the title(s)? I always read about the authors and then find their books to read. It’s a fun rabbit hole to follow for me. Which is exactly how this went down right here right now. Also, you can safely disregaurd this inquiry because I am not really blog or tech savvy at all and horrible with self-promotion.
If the linking is the issue- don’t maybe. Anyone who wants to read your book will be more than happy to copy paste it.

Yep. It was very simple to find your book even with the co-author. I typed in Michael Raven and poetry on Amazon.

I mean the artist of the cover of your book. My apologies.

You do have an authors page. I spoke to soon.

          1. michael raven Avatar

I had a dedicated page for the book, which is probably what caused the AI to flag me as a commercial site — even though I don’t do direct sales. But you can’t argue with AI. I’ve learned that lesson at FB.

Oh, I see. Interesting. No you cannot argue with algorithms. I learned that through Etsy now that I’m thinking of it. The algorithms there were messed with so much it was not really possible to be in control of being found in search. I gave up.

Often, getting in touch with a human support person (and speaks English as their native language) is nigh impossible, which makes matters worse.

Michael: read all comments before writing a response.

          🤣

*Hangs head. Same. If I’d only navigated your site before commenting. Well, it made for some poetry fodder at about 3 a.m. which I’m usually done posting then and off to bed, but my daughter was awake still and bright eyed as ever.

Ugh. 3am (I swear) is the time that my brain wants to think about things, so it wakes me up almost on the nose most nights. I don’t even need an alarm clock to wake up for my near-nightly thinking sessions.

          3. flytheraven Avatar

I usually wake between 2 and 4 a.m.. For a good while it was 4 a.m. on the dot. Now, since having my daughter, most the night I’m up but that doesn’t mean my mind isn’t still in dream land.
After our converstation yesterday I big bit of my trauma processed that I hadn’t even been aware was sitting there. Figures. That’s what I do. I process my stuff and it ends up processing other people’s stuff.

The co-author is my daughter, who provided the cover art (with help from Tara, my publisher). That is the handle she uses in the art world when she doesn’t want people to know her real name (a good online practice for a young woman in this day and age, IMO).

        1. flytheraven Avatar

Very neat! A family project. I love that. I agree, I rarely use my real name in real life as it is let alone online anyplace. I’ve tried putting my image up but it quickly goes unwell and I take it back down.

My photo is a concession that I will not use my legal name. I hate pictures. I hate people telling me to smile. “That IS my smile,” I tell them and they never believe me. 🤣

          2. flytheraven Avatar

Lucky. Women have it hardwired in to smile from birth. Your photo is great. It’s a whole vibe that matches your writing as well as your music, too. Can’t be faked. The new cool is authenticity and being true can’t go out of style. It’s too interesting how different and alike we all are.

I never saw much point in being anyone other than who I am. Well, after about 20 anyways…

          4. flytheraven Avatar

It took me until I had no choice. I was 31 when it no longer could matter to be anyone but myself. Hopefully it was a gentler evolving for you.

It was more of a phase of my trying to be other than who I was during the teen years. It took me a while to get wholly back to it, but certain life events will sometimes kick you in the teeth hard enough to help you remember who you are.

Being a teenager is a great experience meant for self-discovery. Great in the sense of an undertaking. Yes, life does reveal us to ourselves one way or another.

          7. michael raven Avatar

Eventually! Well, for most of us anyway.

Haha yes, there are those that have a certain stubbornness that can sometimes be marginally charming… I think.

          9. michael raven Avatar

“He could school stones in how to be stubborn.” Or something to that effect…

          10. flytheraven Avatar

            Right. Haha, some could.

My hope that listing mentioning it will suffice because it is available through several online retailers. But it was never intended to be a money-maker when I worked to get it published. Poetry books generally are not big moneymakers and I’ve never been motivated to write because I thought it would make me famous or rich. I write because I must.

      1. flytheraven Avatar

Makes sense. And with text being the main form of communicating now, the live quality of writing and instant gratification does put blogging a smidge before book publishing. Book publishing seems to be for the fans now. I never want to be famous either but am also aware we don’t get to always choose that. At this point I would like to avoid being infamous more if I can. There’s really no fortune in fame anyways. Spiritual fortune though, is priceless.
