  • Half-penny Thoughts — 09mar25

Photo by Bharath Kumar on Unsplash

As I delving back into the habit of writing prose versus my habit in recent years of writing almost exclusively poetry, I’m tossing around several ideas to bounce around my largely empty cranium.

Okay, it’s more like dumping a large bucket of superballs at this time.

Or, if I’m more upfront and honest about what I’m doing, throwing the whole bunch of superballs all at once as hard as I can and see what comes out of the bouncy mess.

  • Half-penny thoughts — follow-up to 05mar26

For those who are interested, I discovered the problem with my scheduled tasks (but not the weird refusal of Google’s search engines to crawl the site for indexing).

I’m probably going to make a hash of the explanation. That said…

  • Half-penny thoughts — 05mar26

There are days where I ask myself if I’m going about everything all wrong when it comes to having a web presence for my writing.

The wonder spans from formatting to content to design to SEO to paid vs free vs subscriptions vs donations… So it goes.

Even something as simple as a domain name has implications. I just discovered that a published author uses “Ravensweald” as his fantasy series collection’s series name, the series published almost at the same time that I double, triple, quadruple checked to make sure there were no apparent conflicts for the site name before acquiring the domain. So it goes.

And, I should have known that updating a plugin should have been deferred — it broke it’s own cron jobs, so I see errors and I cannot revert because they removed the old version from the plugin repository. The errors are minor and non-critical, but irritating all the same. And I guess Google decided this winter to stop indexing the site for search and yet the console tells me everything’s just ducky. No errors. Just… not indexing. So it goes.

I’m tempted to wipe everything and reload the content with a fresh install of WordPress in case there are lingering ghosts in the machine. So it goes.

Are y’all contemplating any overhauls on your sites? What are some critical key things that you wish you had done differently? Or could do? Do you think you are underpaid for your content? Or do you think there must be a non-traditional approach to deriving/providing benefit to content.

    So it goes.

    UPDATE:

It seems that things are working as intended so far and I cleaned up some of the rune pages. As I mentioned before, sceadugenga.com is no longer intended to be a standard blog, but more of a static reference website for Elder Futhark runes and, as time permits, I’ll be updating and improving the ogham/ogam pages as well (which currently need a little TLC and work to complete the second half of the alphabet). I may eventually add more pages that include my other explorations into neolithic animism and indigenous beliefs.

If you want to check it out, feel free to visit sceadugenga.com. If you want to go back to what it last looked like and re-read earlier posts of a more traditional blogging nature, you can view the archive at walksinshadows.wordpress.com.

    Have a great evening!

  • Moving stuff around

Anxiety reigns, although it really shouldn’t play a role. And I mean, not at all.

I’m dedicating part of my weekend to migrate my previous site over to my new host and change the registrar over to them as well. I decided that I liked Sceadugenga for a site name and I don’t want to give it up, even if I don’t plan to make it my main site. And, seeing it is up for renewal, and I am allowed several sites for the same price as a single site at this host, I’ve decided now is the time for the move.

Why am I anxious? I am not certain. I have the backup files. The site won’t actually redirect folks until I point the internet to it, which I won’t do until I have everything set up at the new host.

It is likely just the lack of familiarity with the process that makes me feel all nervy and itchy. And I’m not sure why it takes a minimum of half an hour before I see what has been broke due to my lack of experience.

Aded: I think I did it wrong. already. Rework is not my favorite past-time and I’m thinking it is going to require rework.

What will eventually be sceadugenga is probably almost exclusively my rune pages and other resources that I continue to link to. The posts will probably all go private or be eliminated completely to keep sceadugenga running light. And while I can just park the domain, I typically prefer to not do such things. Use it if you have it, that kinda thing.

    Wish me luck.

  • Contact Spam

Photo by Hannes Johnson on Unsplash

The title sounds like a communicable disease, doesn’t it? Anyhoo…

Contacting me is changing around here.

Just an FYI in case you have thought about talking to me about, well… anything really… one-on-one.

I’ve decided against continuing to make the contact form available on my “about” page. For every single legit attempt to communicate with me, I get about fifty to a hundred spam contacts. Over the years, I’ve also had some very odd communications from folks as well.

  • The long drive, connectivity and tech

In my post where I mentioned I will be busy this summer with things that take me away from posting here quite so frequently, I alluded to a lack of connectivity for a spell as being one of those reasons. Well, those plans are starting to firm up and I will be incommunicado near the end of July for about 5-10 days.

I’m going to be posting less often over the summer. I think so, anyway.

    Why?

I have a couple of irons in the fire, among other reasons:

I know, yawn, blow-by-blow accounts are so dull and so very much not droll (let us not confuse the two “d” words, please), but I’m going to natter on a bit about it anyway. It would possibly be wise to skip this post unless you are somewhat interested in the process.

  • Storytime

Photo by Patrick Fore on Unsplash

I just got to the stage where my fiction subdomain is getting becoming functional. The keyword is “functional”, but it is far from finished/polished and the content quality there is. erm, lacking at the moment. Of course, it is purely for testing ideas and functionality, so it will eventually be wiped.

It is not currently behind a “maintenance mode” wall, so if you want to see how the Fictioneer WordPress template demos on my site, you can check it out at fiction.ravensweald.com.
