wasting away

oh, that doppelgänger you
shroud of shadow & secret
in the hollow hill below
every wall a door leading
to more walls and doors, but
i have drunk your wine &
i know that i cannot
shake my fetters free
all i ask is a kiss before dying
before i waste away for
the want of you

Okay so today I saw it again. Dave Alvin (guitar guy, mostly country style I guess) was in Sisters of Mercy for a hot minute? And now I’m seeing that he played guitar on two Gun Club songs from their last album? I’m confused, befuddled, and just a little bit turned on. Any knowledge on this, Michael?

Never was a huge fan of Gun Club or Dave Alvin, but those bands borrowed from each other left and right. Patricia Morrison from Gun Club was… Um… On the cover of Floodlands (there is a believable rumor that suggests she didn’t play a note on her bass). Maybe folks are conflating the two. Of course, Sisters performed with a number of lineups without any real songwriting credits to anyone but Eldritch. He has not published anything new since Vision Thing.

Good questions. I don’t have ready answers though.

Hmmm the styles are so different it seems odd but . . . I did see the Patricia Morrison connection. I’m a sucker for Berlin and Terri Nunn; I liked her better as Eldritch’s female foil

Terri could sing instead of just standing there.

Sometimes style comes down to production and dressing. Take Fields off the Nephilim, for instance. Goth inspired by spaghetti westerns.

Also, part of the reason I’ve explored so many styles of playing as musician myself is that sometimes you just want something new and don’t want to be limited by what people expect from you based on what you’ve done before. Perhaps he wanted to try on goth subculture for a change?

Now that is something to consider.

Gave a gander at Gun Club and I can see why they didn’t stay on my radar beyond the periphery. They had a sound very similar to X, which already filled my needs for that “cowpunk” feel. I always preferred the more psychobilly Cramps in that genre at the time.

The Cramps had the great benefit of being produced by Alex Chilton😋

There is that, which I did not know. But Lux and Poison created an unforgettable atmosphere for me that many bands failed at. That, and inspiration from B-type films. 🤣

I agree; think the Cramps were the best at that too. I think you were the first person who suggested I listen to them

Sure, ‘bout this time of year. Goo Goo Muck for Halloween!

            🤣 Probably.

In my defense, you did mention dopplegangers.

Well, Ashgrove is a great song, and his version of Highway 61 Revisited is nice cause you can actually hear the lyrics. (Not so much from Bob.)

Lovely. And the wall that is a door, leading to more walls and doors…unsettling…maybe in a good way.

Perhaps. Or maybe it just is.

I am trying to resolve something that is best left unresolved.
