casting runes — 26jan26

ansuz
left to dangle at
the ol' hanging tree &
i cannot breathe
without you
mouth to mouth

A poem prompted by a randomly selected Elder Futhark rune.

Today’s rune is ansuz, which has a core meaning “a god” (intended to be Odin), “mouth” or “breath”. Odin is representative of many, many things… in this case, ansuz is most representative of the mouth/breath (speech) that gives life to poetry, magic, song, language, and spirit — largely inseparable in the Viking worldview — and Odin is considered the supreme master of these intertwined concepts. By way of the Anglo-Saxon Futhorc, the rune is named æsc, which is translated to “ash”, a tree associated with Odin and is representative of resilience and strength.

Mmm…ever heard the song “The Hanging Tree”? It’s by James Newton Howard. It always makes me think of the rune Ansuz & of Odin.

I have not. I’ll look it up in a bit and check it out. Thanks!

      Love the lyrics, thanks!

“Are you, are you coming to the tree?
Where dead man called out for his love to flee
Strange things did happen here, no stranger would it be
If we met at midnight in the hanging tree”

I’m glad I listened to the nudge to share the song with you 🎵 😊

It’s got that folk feel to it in the beginning that reminds me a lot of the songs that I wish I had played more when I was still performing folk music. Unfortunately, the other half of the duo was pretty stuck on originals, 60s and Irish folk. Times I tried to introduce this kind of song, I got browbeaten into my withdrawing the suggestion.

I understand the introduction of the orchestral music, but I think it would have been more solid as a completely a cappella piece and would have retained more of the haunting feel. Still, well done and thanks again for the suggestion.

If you enjoy a more folk feel I have one more recommendation…”Keep On The Sunny Side” by Josie Hope Hall & The Covey Band 😊 Enjoy ✨️

I shall leave my recs at that for today! I love music waaaaay too much 😅

That’s an old folk standard. I’ll see how they interpret it.
