Half-penny thoughts (pt 2) — 09dec25

In completely unrelated news…

Is it my imagination or are a lot of comments on folks’ blogs starting to look like bots/AI wrote them?

I was scrolling through a few comments on other sites and I’ve noticed that more of them are increasingly sound “off”. Commentors with this flavor of comments don’t dare add value to the conversations; they seem mostly to confirm and affirm. And the truly “weird” ones seem to miss the main topic of discussion entirely, often glomming onto something said in passing.

Maybe I’m just paranoid? Or a grump? Maybe I need more cigarettes.

In still other news:

Sometimes Jetpack will tell you if the comment is spam. I just let those roll on by. Most of the ones I get are from folks that have been following my work for a while and have commented on other posts.

Granted, I do miss the mark from time to time in my comments. Let’s just call it a senior moment. 😉

Not so much the spam… It’s those comments that parrot elements of the post without saying anything or those that give a multiparagraph English Lit 101 analysis of a haiku. That smell funny. 😂

I’m mostly senior moment, so I can relate.

        Oh my.

Someone did correct my grammar on a post. I tend to write like I talk (country as cornbread), it tends to get me in trouble from time to time. 🤭 It was something like no coffee, no tea and I got school on double negatives. Someday I might be able to hire an editor. Until that day comes, 🤷‍♀️.

My bestie and I tease that we share a brain cell. 😂

Really? Grammar Nazis at your door? I say we put the hurt on them. Make them listen to… Perry Como’s Christmas! Mwah ha ha ha.

If you don’t mind d me asking, how’s your health journey going?

I got the finger waggle from the RN even after I told her that I had no clue why I spiked over late summer and that I was eating/moving better than the spring. “More exercise, watch the carbs”. Sigh.

The same old song and dance.

          4. michael raven Avatar

Exactly. I mostly ignore it these days.

Send some to my blog. I wouldn’t mind some comments 😀

    1. michael raven Avatar

I try to comment when it makes sense to. Maybe i should ask ai what to put as a comment?

Using AI for blogging defeats the purpose. Blogging is communication. Bots writing posts and other bots commenting them isn’t communication, it’s white noise.

        1. michael raven Avatar

Pretty much. There must be a payday in doing it though. It’s the only reason I can think of why people would even bother.

          1. Veselin Avatar

            No idea. Gaining stats maybe?

          2. michael raven Avatar

            Advertising dollars and malware?

          3. Veselin Avatar

Probably not here, strict anti-spam rules. No idea, I don’t have the same problem

Unless they’re self hosted elsewhere? I don’t know. Just shooting in the dark as to their motives.

I’m just grateful if I get any comments! And as long as it’s not my comments on your posts that sound like AI I’m happy. It’s a pain though, AI is getting into all sorts of places where it has no business. Now go smoke a few. 🙂

I’ve had a few visit my site with in-depth analyses of my own writing that were laughably wrong.

They stopped when I wouldn’t visit their “Travel to my Exotic City” page.

Definitely have noticed this, Michael. (p.s. Interesting article! lol)

Fascinating comment Stacey. I can see your point of view but worry that my creativity may not be enough. 😂

I don’t get enough comments to worry about this, even after 18 years of blogging. I find that obscure comments/likes come from fledgling bloggers looking to call attention to their own sites. I also have the option to accept or delete first-time comments. It’s far down on my list of concerns…smoke ’em if you got ’em. 😁

    1. michael raven Avatar

Ahh, if only I had them! It would soothe my current mood to smoke a pack or three.

Yeah, those fledgling bloggers have the mistaken idea that writing fluff comments will drive hits. But — I’ll give them a gander before I bother with the blitz-likers who click 30 stars in 30-seconds. Those, I will avoid like the plague.

Ah, the subtle nuance that can never be captured by AI.
    You’re not wrong.

    1. michael raven Avatar

I don’t know about never, but AI certainly has an uncanny valley about it in many cases these days. Not… quite… right… And sometimes the focus is very off.

      1. chrisnelson61 Avatar

A great potential for mis-information given how many seem to rely on AI these days as a first point of reference.

        1. michael raven Avatar

There is that. Which is why I double check the references when I search for information using AI. I will say that the enterprise variants are much more stable and less prone to hallucinations, depending on the agent used for the research.
