i wonder at the
absence of flames
my world has been
on fire almost
every day and now…
…now?
there is a long,
cool rain falling
quenching the heat
and i cannot
identify the cause,
nor why of it all
ever so slight of nervous
seeking a torch
to now light my way

This hit somewhere deep. That strange, unsettling quiet after chaos, when the fires go out and you’re left standing in the rain, not quite sure if you’re relieved or uneasy. I felt this. Sometimes it’s not about understanding the ‘why’… just learning to stand in the cool, unfamiliar calm without reaching for another flame.

There’s that, definitely. I’m prone to being a firebug, but maybe I’ll change my ways.
Glad this touched you in some way. Thanks for saying something 🙏🏼
‘There is calm in the air
But there is greater calm than I can bear’
Not mine (sadly). Yes, how we wish for the still yet yearn for the chaos when it comes.
Really well put.
Thanks Chris. Who’s quote is that?
I dunno… I’m feeling old and tired of chaos lately.
It’s a line from an And Also The Trees song.
Ahhh, they’re one of those bands I haven’t listened to enough to pick up the lyrics. Time to add them back into the rotation!
I know you’ve listened and aren’t really a fan so I won’t foist them upon you. Maybe listen to Slow Pulse Boy (from which comes the line) though.
I don’t need to be a fan when I have over three thousand miles of driving ahead of me. 🙂
I’ll check out Slow Pulse Boy too.
Enjoy.
Oh, and I’m looking forward to the movie of your trip. I’ve got the title: ‘Raven’s Flight’, but not settle on who will play Tara and yourself. Any suggestions?
Hmm.. I don’t watch much film these days so I’ll have to speak more in generalities.
For Tara, we’ll want one of those brave, daring and sassy types who can pull of her snark with a sharp glint in her eyes. Someone action-hero-ish without being super hero-ish.
For me, think of a heavier set not-as-funny-as-he-thinks-or-looks type. Accident-prone comic relief.
🤣 I’m hopeless at remembering the names of actors in films – too busy with the plot (or pulling it apart!).
3000 miles? A long trip…so here’s a short playlist for Tara and yourself to enjoy or ignore. I’ve tried to avoid the obvious and go for some artists you might not be familiar with:
1. Virus Meadow – And Also The Trees
2. In All That Drifts From Summit Down – A Dead Forest Index
3. On Dark Horses – Emma Ruth Rundle
4. Fever Ray – Fever Ray
5. Country Justice – i.e. Crazy
6. Elergies to Lessons Learnt – I Like Trains
7. Seedy, The Best of The Passage – The Passage
8. Ovations – Piano Magic
9. In the Hothouse – The Sound
10. Nobody Wants to be Here & Nobody Wants to Leave – The Twilight Sad
I’ll add them to my list! Thanks.
I’m sure one of you will find at least one song you almost quite like 🤣!
Probably more like a handful. 😉
🤣 I’ll hold both of you to that!
I’m afraid she’s on her own — we’re in separate vehicles. I could broadcast on my walkie talkies we’re using for comms when there’s no mobile service, but I might end up in a ditch sooner if I do that 🤣
