Masochism world

There was a guy one of my tattooist used to regularly tattoo. It turned out his client was not getting inked, but just getting tattoos for the sensation they gave him.

“Is he just a masochist,” I asked, having immediately decided it must be true.

“Not really,” said the Brain, as his typo’d business card proclaimed. “He doesn’t much care for pain. I think he is actively trying to avoid pain.”

“Explain,” I asked, befuddled, wincing as he hit the nerve bundle near my armpit. “Do you not use needles either?”

The Brain frowned. “Of course I use needles. He’s getting a tattoo.” He held my bicep firm to prevent me from flinching and messing up his linework.

“So… why no ink?” I said, taking a drag on my cigarette, for this was back when you could smoke while getting a tattoo.

“He doesn’t want it to stick around more than scar tissue.”

“So… Why get one at all if he doesn’t like ink?”

“He says it makes his pain go away” said the Brain.

“Riiiight,” was my incredulous response. “Oh-kay.”

The Brain shrugged. “His business, I just follow his direction.”

Welcome to masochism world, I thought to myself. Definitely a masochist.

It is years later, arthritis and old injuries later. The Brain’s client was right. Pain washes the pain away.

It’s too expensive and no one will agree to doing tattoos without ink anymore, however. They just nod and you can see it in their eyes: Welcome to masochism world.

I called my tattoo artist my therapist. He inflicted the pain I needed to get through the darkness of depression. It validated that I wasn’t as dead as I felt. The side effects? One full and one half-sleeve of original art. It beats self-cutting and the resulting scarring.

      You get it, then.

When I say that one kind of pain is useful to distract from another pain, people often don’t understand. I think it gives an element of control that otherwise feels out of control.

Thank you for the comment and the affirmation.

Kindred souls. I’m glad it helped.

I can understand that. Every now and then I get a minimal bout of ‘restless leg syndrome’ in my lower right leg. It’s very irritating, and I usually twist and turn the leg into positions that cause a different pain, which distracts from the RLS. I saw a TV programme about it – there’s no known cure or effective medication – which featured people who lived with a far worse case of it, on a daily basis. Some inflicted other, worse, pains on themselves, to distract from the RLS. One guy would shut his foot in the door, over and over; terrible to see, but it helped him. I guess it’s also like people who self-harm, cutting themselves with knives etc, to distract from psychological pain. At least it’s controlled when a tattooist does it.

Most won’t risk their licenses for it. This was back when there were no hard age requirements and infections were still a regular problem (there was one shop that had a reputation, so only new people went there). The health board would probably have a fit if they found someone doing that these days.

Still, that tale sticks with me 38 years later. The endorphin high lingered for several weeks after my last tattoo. Just enough to keep the joint pain at bay for a spell (healing takes a while and is its own source of discomfort that distracts from the worse pain).

A painful process all around, but if it gives relief… So much is prohibited now that served a useful purpose. I hope you’re not troubled with the pain now?

          Always 😊

There are days and then there are days.

I’m glad it makes sense to some of us. 😅
