Toe trauma

I’ll have to admit, the stress of losing the toenail on my big toe via medical intervention was worse than the reality of it. Just in case anyone wants to know about the experience in case you experience s similar situation.

Recap: I dropped the cycle trainer on my toe earlier this year. It’s quite heavy with the flywheel and I hobbled around for over a month while it healed. The nail always looked like a miserable mess afterwards. Mostly black and purple since.

Somewhere asking the way yesterday (or recently), I managed to loosen it up enough so that when I put in some slippers as a ward against cold basement floors, I managed to dislodge it almost completely and it was perpendicular to it’s normal position.

I cannot lie… I’m a big baby when it comes to such things. I managed to put it back in it’s proper position, but it did not look good. I can fingerprint a dead man who blew his head off with a shotgun post-autopsy (they let funeral homes sew them back up if needed), but I can’t look at my own mangled toe without getting panicky.

So I went to urgent care first thing this morning and their quick assessment was that the whole of it had to go.

Fun!

So they shot me up with lidocaine and epinephrine. I closed my eyes and prayed a little too whomever might listen.

“Can you feel this?” No.

“How about this?” Well that’s a little uncomfortable, but more of a pulling sensation than pain and–

“We’re done. No blood. No infection. You nail was getting under the old I’ve and it’s almost to the tip of your toe.”

And then it was just a little gimpy to walk until the lidocaine wore off. It actually feels better than before it was removed.

I’m still afraid to look at it. Did I mention I was a baby about such things?

Hope your toe recovers soon, Michael! Ouch!!!

Thank you, Sharon. Not my idea of a good time, let me tell you. I pretended I was getting a tattoo while it happened. Problem is, it didn’t feel much like getting a tattoo…

      Have a good day/evening.

I can imagine how painful that must have been, Michael! Get better soon. Have a great week and thank you!

Ouch. Poor old you. Good that you got professional treatment, now hopefully the toe will settle and you’ll have peace from it. Look after you, all the best. ๐Ÿ™‚๐Ÿ™‚

Oh man, this is brutal. I’m so sorry. I’m not sure you read to the last post that Duke cracked his toenail. It was so painful. In glad you are on the mend. I’m a baby about these things! ๐Ÿ˜†

    1. michael raven Avatar

I did. Something like that is never fun. Ouch! I hope Duke recovers quickly.

Certain things give me the willies, and toenails out of place are apparently one of those things. I live with chronic pain, but this new slight (very slight) stinging when I took a shower this morning made me want to mutter “this is not fair”. ๐Ÿ˜‚

      I’m such a baby.

Oh ugh. It’s ok to be a baby sometimes. ๐Ÿ’•eeebie jeebies for sure! He’s like you. I drugged him for the appointment today to take the bandage off and howled like a huskey ๐Ÿ˜‚(he doesn’t usually) and is a baby..

Ow! I hope you recover quickly. Question…will it grow back or is it just gone forever?

    1. michael raven Avatar

I haven’t had the courage to look yet (I’m such a wuss), but she told me that it had already largely grown back under the part they took off. I was surprised, as my toenails don’t usually seem to grow that fast — or I have a misunderstanding about how they develop.

Stings a bit in the shower, but I expect that will fade after a few days. I’ll have to inspect it when I find the courage to remove the dressing, probably later today (or tomorrow? Or Wednesday?)

I don’t blame you. I wouldn’t look either. I’m extremely squeamish and lately I have trouble handling gore in film. I never had an issue before but lately everything grosses me out just like real life injuries and whatnot do. Feel better!

I hear you. Same for me. I can’t seem to shrug off gross stuff like I did when I was younger, especially bodily harm stuff. Maybe its because I’ve largely been away from the visual representations of it for a couple of years after I got over my zombie-horror phase (and frankly, I felt most of the media makers relied too much on gross-out horror, when implied violence would have been much more frightening than extreme viscera).

    Thanks, Jenn. ๐Ÿ’•

Oh Iโ€™d have to look. I find the body fascinating in its intricacies, mechanics, and quirks.

      I’ll send you a picture!

That doesn’t sound fun at all. I hope it grows back. And not too painful when the meds wear off.

The meds are gone. Stung a bit in the shower, but so far so good. Real test will be when I get the courage to expose it to air.
