I’ll have to admit, the stress of losing the toenail on my big toe via medical intervention was worse than the reality of it. Just in case anyone wants to know about the experience in case you experience s similar situation.
Recap: I dropped the cycle trainer on my toe earlier this year. It’s quite heavy with the flywheel and I hobbled around for over a month while it healed. The nail always looked like a miserable mess afterwards. Mostly black and purple since.
Somewhere asking the way yesterday (or recently), I managed to loosen it up enough so that when I put in some slippers as a ward against cold basement floors, I managed to dislodge it almost completely and it was perpendicular to it’s normal position.
I cannot lie… I’m a big baby when it comes to such things. I managed to put it back in it’s proper position, but it did not look good. I can fingerprint a dead man who blew his head off with a shotgun post-autopsy (they let funeral homes sew them back up if needed), but I can’t look at my own mangled toe without getting panicky.
So I went to urgent care first thing this morning and their quick assessment was that the whole of it had to go.
Fun!
So they shot me up with lidocaine and epinephrine. I closed my eyes and prayed a little too whomever might listen.
“Can you feel this?” No.
“How about this?” Well that’s a little uncomfortable, but more of a pulling sensation than pain and–
“We’re done. No blood. No infection. You nail was getting under the old I’ve and it’s almost to the tip of your toe.”
And then it was just a little gimpy to walk until the lidocaine wore off. It actually feels better than before it was removed.
I’m still afraid to look at it. Did I mention I was a baby about such things?
